Royal Caribbean is seeking experienced Light Technicians to join our world-class Entertainment Technical team.
The Light Technician is responsible for the programming, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of lighting, show control, and fog/haze systems across onboard entertainment venues. This role ensures the successful delivery of production shows, guest entertainment, rehearsals, special events, and charter functions while maintaining the highest technical, safety, and operational standards.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Program, operate, and maintain lighting, show control, haze, and low-fog systems for production shows, rehearsals, guest entertainers, and special events.
- Set up, position, test, and dismantle lighting equipment for onboard entertainment venues.
- Collaborate with guest entertainers and production teams to ensure all technical lighting requirements are met.
- Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of lighting equipment and control systems.
- Maintain lighting consoles, intelligent fixtures, conventional fixtures, dimming systems, follow spots, and special effects equipment.
- Replace lamps, filters, gels, fluids, COâ‚‚ cylinders, and other consumables as required.
- Maintain an adequate inventory of spare parts and consumables required for daily operations.
- Ensure the artistic integrity of all production shows by following approved lighting designs and obtaining authorization before making programming changes.
- Report technical issues and equipment failures promptly to the Head Sound & Light Technician.
- Update technical documentation, lighting plots, and maintenance records when equipment changes occur.
- Coordinate with shoreside technical support for major equipment installations, upgrades, or repairs.
- Participate in mandatory safety drills, departmental meetings, and training sessions.
- Complete a comprehensive handover for the incoming technician at the end of each contract.
- Ensure non-essential lighting equipment is powered down when not in use.
- Comply with all company policies, safety regulations, environmental standards, SQM procedures, and USPH guidelines.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years' experience operating and maintaining professional lighting systems within live entertainment, theatre, concerts, cruise ships, or similar environments.
- Hands-on experience programming professional lighting consoles and show control systems.
- Working knowledge of intelligent lighting fixtures, conventional lighting, DMX systems, dimmers, follow spots, haze and fog equipment.
- Ability to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair lighting equipment efficiently.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, multicultural environment while maintaining high technical standards.
- Fluent in spoken and written English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous cruise ship experience in an entertainment technical role.
- Experience supporting musical theatre, Broadway-style productions, or large-scale live entertainment.
- Technical education or certification in theatre production, entertainment technology, electrical systems, or a related field.
- Experience with ETC, Wholehog II/III, Wholehog PC, Martin LightJockey, or equivalent lighting control systems.
- Additional language skills (Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, or other languages) are considered an asset.
Other Requirements
- Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 lbs (23 kg).
- Ability to work at heights and in confined backstage or technical areas when required.
- Physically capable of standing, climbing, bending, and working extended hours during rehearsals and performances.
- Must be able to participate fully in emergency drills and safety procedures.
