OSM Thome Recruitment is seeking motivated and hardworking Wipers to support the Environmental and Engine teams with the cleaning, maintenance, and safe operation of waste-handling systems onboard. This role ensures compliance with environmental, safety, and sanitation standards while contributing to the smooth and efficient operation of the ship.

As a Wiper in the Engine Department, you will assist with the cleaning, sanitization, and basic maintenance of machinery spaces and waste management systems. This includes supporting incinerator operations, pulper systems, garbage handling processes, and maintaining a clean and safe working environment at all times.

You will also play a vital role in ensuring waste segregation, environmental compliance, and safe operational practices across all relevant areas of the ship.

This position requires professionalism, teamwork, and strict adherence to safety and environmental policies.


Duties and Responsibilities:


Environmental & Safety Compliance:

  • Follow all environmental, ISM/ISO, SQM, USPH, safety, and sanitation standards.
  • Immediately report any malfunctioning environmental systems to supervisors.
  • Always wear proper PPE and ensure others in the area do the same.

Waste & Sanitation Operations:

  • Clean and maintain engine spaces, machinery areas, and waste-handling rooms.
  • Maintain cleanliness, sanitization, and pest control in garbage areas and cold storage rooms.
  • Support operation, monitoring, and cleaning of the incinerator plant and related equipment.
  • Operate pulper systems, change water daily, and log cleaning activities.
  • Clean and maintain shredders, conveyors, compactors, refrigerators, drains, pumps, and piping.
  • Perform washing, painting, and maintenance tasks as assigned.

Waste Segregation & Handling:

  • Ensure proper segregation of all waste at the source using company color-coded procedures (wet, burnable, glass, recyclable metals, etc.).
  • Sanitize glass and prepare bagged recyclables for storage.
  • Identify and report improperly segregated waste.
  • Assist with garbage off-loading in port and ensure materials remain properly stored.

Operational Reporting:

  • Provide accurate records of incinerated, landed, or discharged food waste.
  • Ensure large equipment or materials are only stored or off-loaded with authorization.

Additional Duties

  • Assist with general engine department tasks and maintenance when required.
  • Ensure preparation and safety signage before cleaning or repair tasks.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by supervisors.



Qualifications: 

  • Practical knowledge of incinerator operations required.
  • Previous experience on passenger vessels or ships of 400 GT or higher preferred.
  • Must hold valid:
    • Basic & Advanced Firefighting
    • Lifesaving training
    • Life-boatman certification
    • STCW-required safety and emergency training for seafarers

Language Requirements

  • Able to speak English clearly and professionally.
  • Able to read and understand English instructions, procedures, and safety information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and other departments.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform manual tasks for extended periods.
  • Able to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Good vision (near, far, color, peripheral, depth perception).
  • Physically able to participate in emergency drills, including lifeboat operations.
