The Doctor is responsible for delivering high quality medical care to all crewmembers and guests onboard. This role supports the Staff Captain and Senior Doctor in all health-related matters, including illness reporting, outbreak prevention, and compliance with international, national, and company medical standards. Additional duties may be assigned as needed to support exceptional guest service and operational excellence.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reports directly to the Senior Doctor and, for medical-related issues, to the Director of Medical Operations or Chief Medical Officer.
  • Serves as a medical advisor to the Master and Staff Captain regarding medical services, guest and crew health, and overall hygiene conditions onboard.
  • Holds a Basic Safety Course Certificate and all required licenses and certifications.
  • Remains present during all clinic hours when on duty or as required by clinical demands.
  • Provides competent medical care to guests and crew and keeps the Master and Staff Captain informed of significant medical matters.
  • Responds to all medical emergency codes onboard, including when off duty.
  • Cooperates with other doctors to reduce patient waiting times and maintain a positive, efficient clinic environment.
  • Oversees medical supply inventory and hospital budget; participates in annual budgeting for consumables and medications.
  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality. Suspected contagious illnesses must be reported to the Staff Captain and shoreside medical leadership.
  • Ensures a professional and private clinical environment. A female nurse must accompany a male doctor when examining a female patient in any state of undress.
  • Participates in monthly safety meetings and recommends improvements for overall ship safety.
  • Oversees the administration, storage, and documentation of medications in compliance with regulations and company policies; participates in monthly drug counts with the Staff Captain or Chief Security Officer.
  • Understands and adheres to the Safety and Quality Management System (SQM) procedures relevant to the role.
  • Conducts inspections of galley and food-handling areas and advises on sanitation standards in accordance with USPH, CDC, and other public health authorities.
  • Assists the Safety Manager with safety and personal hygiene orientations for new crewmembers.
  • Maintains regular communication with the Director of Medical Operations and Chief Medical Officer regarding medical practices and procedures.
  • Documents all patient encounters thoroughly, including medical history, exam findings, diagnoses, treatment plans, referrals, and laboratory results.
  • Follows company billing procedures.
  • Does not waive medical fees unless authorized by company policy. Only the Staff Captain or Master may waive charges, and this must be recorded in the patient’s medical record.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Senior Doctor, Staff Captain, or Medical Operations leadership.

Education Requirements:

  • Medical Degree from a recognized university.
  • Active, current medical license in good standing from country or state/province of origin.
  • Completion of a specialty training program in one of the following: Emergency Medicine, General Practice, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, or General Surgery.
  • Valid ACLS, PALS, and Adult Trauma Life Support certifications for the full duration of the onboard contract (doctor is responsible for maintaining validity).


Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in an acute care setting after completing formal training.
  • At least 1 year of practical experience with Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
  • Experience diagnosing and managing a wide range of medical conditions, including performing minor surgical procedures (suturing, removal of benign lesions, foreign object removal, ingrown toenail removal, and immobilization of simple fractures).
  • Preferred experience in Anesthesiology, Intensive Care, Internal Medicine, or Pulmonology.

Language Requirements:

  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in spoken and written English.


Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand, walk long distances onboard, climb stairs, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds.

Required vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Must wear PPE properly and be trained in its correct use.

Must understand decontamination zones and follow correct circulation procedures.
