The Dentist is responsible for providing high quality dental care to both Guests and Crewmembers, addressing emergency needs and offering general dental services within the scope of the ship’s capabilities. Care for Crewmembers includes preventative dentistry, dental hygiene and education, emergency treatments, extractions, fillings, X-rays, and management of dental-related infections.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:- Reports directly to the Senior Doctor and, on medical matters, to the Director of Medical Operations or Chief Medical Officer.
- Acts as an advisor to the Master and Staff Captain on all dental-related issues concerning Guest and Crewmember health.
- Must hold a Basic Safety Course Certificate and maintain all required professional licenses and certifications.
- Remains present during all clinic hours when on duty and provides competent dental care to Guests and Crew as needed. Keeps the Master and Staff Captain informed of important developments.
- Responds to dental emergencies and supports the medical team during medical emergencies when feasible.
- Manages dental appointments with support from the medical secretary, ensuring there are no queues outside the clinic.
- Oversees dental supply inventory and monitors the dental budget. Participates in annual budgeting of medical consumables and medications with the medical team.
- Maintains patient confidentiality. Suspected contagious illnesses must be reported to the Senior Doctor and shoreside Medical Operations leadership as required.
- Ensures a professional and private clinical environment for all examinations and treatments.
- Prescribes controlled substances in accordance with company policy, SQM regulations, and DEA-compliant standards. Supports proper administration and secure storage of medications. Conducts monthly drug counts or when medical staff changes, with verification by the Staff Captain or Chief Security Officer.
- Holds a narcotics lock key per company protocol; dental assistants follow the same procedures as nursing staff regarding controlled substances.
- Understands and complies with the Safety and Quality Management System (SQM), or QESMS for Celebrity ships, including all responsibilities listed in the Emergency Plan and Station Bill.
- Maintains communication with the Director of Medical Operations, VP of Medical Operations Administration, and Chief Medical Officer regarding dental practices and protocols.
- Primary responsibility is the delivery of dental care to Guests and Crewmembers.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by the Senior Doctor, Staff Captain, or Director of Medical Operations.
- Accurately documents all consultations, histories, examinations, diagnoses, lab findings, referrals, and treatment plans in the patient’s medical record.
- Records clinical notes in SeaCare, the ship’s electronic medical record system, using assigned credentials.
- Follows company billing practices. Fees cannot be waived except by the Staff Captain or Master, and such decisions must be documented in the medical record.
- Supervises the dental assistant; administrative support is provided by the Medical Secretary.
Qualifications & Training:
- Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or equivalent Dental Degree from an accredited institution.
- Active, current dental license in good standing from the country or state/province of origin.
- Completion of specialty training in at least one of the following: General Dental Practice or Endodontics.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Minimum three years of experience performing simple extractions, restorations, fillings, oral hygiene procedures, and managing dental pain (e.g., pulpectomies, abscess drainage, wound suturing, infection management, and aesthetic emergencies).
Language Requirements:
- Intermediate to Advanced verbal and written English proficiency is required.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk long distances, use hands frequently, reach with arms, and use all senses including hearing, speech, taste, and smell.
- Must perform repetitive motions such as bending, climbing, and ascending/descending stairs; able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Requires close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
- Must be physically capable of participating in lifesaving procedures and emergency drills, including lowering lifeboats, with full mobility, vision, hearing, and speech abilities.
- Must adapt to varied temperature conditions (indoor/outdoor).
- Must pass Basic Safety training.
- Additional duties may be required based on operational needs or maritime regulations.
