Position Summary:

The Varnisher is responsible for the maintenance, preparation, and conservation of the vessel’s wooden surfaces, decks, railings, wall panels, floors, and furniture. This skilled trades position performs varnishing and related refinishing tasks throughout guest and crew areas while upholding the company’s quality, environmental, safety, and STAR service standards.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to the company’s environmental policies; report any malfunctioning environmental system immediately to a supervisor.
  • Maintain full familiarity with all relevant safety procedures, including duties listed in the Emergency Plan and Station Bill.
  • Perform varnishing and refinishing work on various wooden elements throughout the ship, including but not limited to:
    • Railings
    • Wall panels
    • Wood floors
    • Furniture
    • Other wood or composite decorative surfaces
  • Respond promptly to issues or guest complaints requiring varnishing or appearance-related corrections.
  • Work flexible shift schedules, including alternative shifts; respond to urgent issues even during off-duty hours when required.
  • Assist with general tasks and additional duties as directed by supervisors anywhere around the vessel.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a similar varnishing, carpentry, or refinishing role, or as an assistant in that field.
  • Strong customer service approach consistent with the STAR Program when interacting with guests and coworkers.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • STCW95 Basic Safety Training and Social Responsibility certification required.


Physical & Language Requirements:

  • Ability to speak English clearly and professionally with guests and crew.
  • Ability to read and write English to interpret work orders, safety procedures, and technical instructions.
  • Regular standing, walking, reaching, and manual work with hands.
  • Frequent lifting and moving of items up to 50 pounds.
  • Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, plus ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be physically capable of participating in all emergency drills and procedures, including lifeboat operations.
  • Full use of arms, legs, hearing, and speech is required for emergency duties.
