Support safe vessel operations through deck maintenance, watchkeeping, mooring activities, and adherence to safety procedures as an Able Seaman.

The Sailor AB is responsible for supporting the safe operation, maintenance, and upkeep of the vessel's decks, exterior areas, and associated equipment. Reporting directly to the Watchkeeping Officer, the Sailor AB performs lookout duties, assists with navigation-related tasks, and contributes to the efficient execution of daily deck operations. The role plays an important part in maintaining safety, operational readiness, and a professional working environment onboard.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out routine maintenance, preservation, and cleaning of decks, superstructures, fittings, railings, lighting fixtures, and non-slip surfaces.
  • Assist with minor repairs and maintenance of deck machinery, equipment, and fittings under the direction of senior officers.
  • Support mooring, anchoring, gangway operations, and rope handling activities.
  • Maintain a vigilant lookout when assigned and promptly report navigational hazards, unsafe conditions, or security concerns to the Officer of the Watch.
  • Operate the vessel's steering system when required and follow helm orders issued by the Master, Officer of the Watch, or Pilot.
  • Comply with all company safety policies, procedures, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Participate actively in safety drills, emergency preparedness exercises, and onboard training programs.
  • Assist in coaching and supporting less experienced deck personnel.
  • Promote environmental awareness, safe working practices, and professional conduct throughout the vessel.
  • Perform additional deck-related duties as assigned to support the vessel's operational needs.


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year of experience as an Ordinary Seaman (OS) or in a similar deck rating position.
  • Previous seagoing experience as an Able Seaman is considered an advantage.
  • Familiarity with bridge watchkeeping duties, including lookout responsibilities, hand steering, fire alarm procedures, and radio communications.
  • Valid STCW certification relevant to the position.
  • Deck Watchkeeping Certificate or equivalent certification is preferred.
  • Strong work ethic, professionalism, and ability to remain calm and effective under pressure.
  • Maritime background and vessel operations experience are advantageous.


Language Requirements:

  • Good command of spoken and written English.
  • Ability to understand vessel procedures, safety instructions, and operational communications.
  • Effective communication skills when interacting with officers and fellow crew members.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work outdoors and perform physically demanding deck duties.
  • Capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs (23 kg).
  • Adequate visual acuity, including depth and color perception.
  • Physically fit to participate in emergency response activities, safety drills, and lifesaving procedures.


Working Conditions:

  • Vessel-based position requiring shift work, watchkeeping duties, and flexible working hours.
  • Regular exposure to changing weather conditions, sea states, and operational deck environments.
  • Mandatory use of appropriate PPE and adherence to all safety regulations.
  • May be required to work in various areas of the vessel in support of deck and operational activities.
